Kindred Spirits

"Marilla is a famous cook. She is trying to teach me to cook but I assure you, Diana, it is uphill work. There's so little scope for imagination in cookery. You just have to go by the rules. The last time I made a cake I forgot to put the flour in."

Has Anyone...

except Annie checked out Brians blog lately. Three things I noted were the Sleepless in Seattle trailer, Ryan Addams website, and Brian is making a music video. Also if you link to the Banty Rooster he links to a site called Dignan's (some odd number) Year Plan. You should check it out.

Our House...

I love my street. It's going to be kind of sad when I finally buy a new house and don't live here any more. It won't be an easy walk down to 17th Street Station, or the park, or Rocky's campus. The Rimrocks won't be practically next door. And there won't be huge (albeit misshapen and dying) cottonwoods down the middle of the street. That is what I'll really miss.

But still, any place in Billings is bound to pretty okay. I'm a little bit partial. :)

Elizabethtown

I'm supposed to be working on an article about science, but just like I did in college, I'm finding something else to do until the last possible second... Desperation is my muse, I've decided. Actually, I never procrastinated this bad in school, and I better break this habit before it becomes too engrained, because it's a little scary.

But anyway, I have been meaning to blog about this movie ever since I watched it last week. Elizabethtown starts off really slow and weird, but at least it's funny (after the failure of his tennis shoe design, Orlando Bloom's character is going to commit suicide on an exercise bike he has rigged up with a knife...and then the phone rings). But keep watching, because although the whole movie is pretty quirky, it gets a lot better. I like the "almost romance" of Drew and Claire (Kirsten Dunst) talking on the phone all night, I guess. But the best part is the end, when Drew goes on a roadtrip with an urn of his dad's remains. Claire made him a scrapbook map complete with exact instructions on where to stop for chili, and mix CDs with music for 42 hrs and 11 minutes of the way. The best, of course, is when he plays "Pride (In the Name of Love)" at the hotel where Martin Luther King, Jr. died.

So, I guess part of the reason I enjoyed it so much is because it really made me want to go on a roadtrip! Which isn't very practical right now, of course, even if it almost 10 degrees above zero now, but who wants to go on another mini roadtrip across Montana this summer?? (Maybe someplace we haven't been, although Virginia City and Butte were a lot of fun!) And then there's the trip to Denver Brooke and I are going on pretty soon...

Ok, back to work.

Thursday Links

I know it's been awhile, but I've been staring at a screen so much for work lately that the last thing I want to do when I have a free minute is surf for cool links. So, it's slim pickings, but here are a few anyway.

iPod news: I upgraded to the iPod video recently. It's so much fun! I've spent every dime I earned on selling my old one on accessories for my new one. I have an addiction, I admit it. On another note, this week, iTunes is offering a free podcast of the State of the Union address. Pretty cool...

Michael Jackson's white glove is for sale on Ebay. Got an extra quarter mil laying around??

In other geek news, Google is finally upgrading google-talk slightly. They are incorporating it more closely with gmail and they are also giving the option to save your chat history in your gmail account. Pretty handy, I'd say...

Dooce linked to The Daily Mumps a couple weeks back. It's extremely cute and I've added it to my daily perusal list. Check out he archives. Cute stuff.

Cool magazine illusions.

Here's a way to make some extra change. Sell a pixel!

Here's an oldie, but goodie. Check out the Subservient Chicken and give him an order!

Move over, Lite Brite, now their's something meatier.

Not much, but at least it's something to look at. Have a lovely Thursday.

Kicking Television

Yeah, right. The last CD I bought was Kicking Television by Wilco, but you know I usually spend my evenings watching movies, not exercising or going places or even reading that much anymore...

Ainsley tagged us for this TV meme, so here goes:

Andrea is just tacking onto Amanda's. Her answers are in this lovely shade of blue.

1. What do you watch most?
Survivor!
Friends

2. What would you be embarrassed to be caught watching even though you do watch it?
I don't really watch enough TV to do that...
Desperate Housewives (not because it's a bad show, just because it's misunderstood. Don't judge a show by it's title.)

3. Write yourself into a TV show.
That would be pretty scary.
I would be the new quirky waitress at Central Perk that Joey would fall in love with, but could NEVER have. :)

4. Replace someone in a TV show.
I think Homer Simpson could add a lot to a CSI team.
Survivor - kick off that dumb Shane and bring back Melinda! Quitter are dumb. Are ya with me, Amanda??

5. Who would you like to see out of tvland forever?
All the people in shows like Without a Trace.
Simon Cowell, Jennifer Love Hewitt(Ghost Whisperer), Teri Hatcher(Desperate Housewives)

6. Who would you like to see back?
Bill Cosby
duh! Friends! or Seinfeld....

7. Entertainment or information?
Entertainment 95% of the time
Is there actually informational TV? hmm...interesting concept. :)

8. What makes for a good viewing experience for you?
Lots of fight scenes, lots of romance. Well, not really, but they are pretty good in moderation. I don't mind predictable plots that much sometimes, but a really good storyline with lots of character development...like Lost...will get me very hooked.
I agree with Amanda. I will also add that the human psychology of Survivor fascinates me. People really are disturbing beings...

9. Have you ever had a great idea for a special niche cable channel (like the Golf Channel or Home and Garden TV)?
An Africa channel would be nice. Except I'm way too cheap to pay for cable (although I rent movies all the time, which isn't cheap).
The 'Friends' channel. Just kidding, I'm really not that obsessed.....really. I just couldn't think of a good answer.

10. What was your favorite show when you were a kid?
Full House
The Waltons

11. Most memorable moment of television?
Um...different moments in the last two seasons of Survivor, I guess. Like Ian making a deal with Tom to take Katie to the final two, and Steph and Danni battling it out in the last challenge. I probably won't remember that in a few more years, though.
Ross and Rachel getting together, Ross and Rachel breaking up, Ross and Rachel getting together, Ross and Rachel breaking up....
No, seriously, it would have to be 9/11 and how important TV got to all of us. I was in college and nobody went to class. We all just congregated and glued our eyes to the news.

12. Most memorable moment you'd just as soon forget?
Don't know.
See my answer above.

13. What would you like to see again?
Lost :)
Lost! Whoo hoo!!
